Bio
Pop Maria

Maria Pop was born in Athens in 1925.

A characteristic figure of the naive artists’ generation, Maria Pop was the daughter of the Spanish violinist and orchestra conductor José Bustín, who also served as the conductor and maestro of the Athens State Orchestra. Her sister was the award-winning writer and translator, Julia Iatridi. She was married to the Athenian lawyer Konstantinos Popp, the son of the well-known journalist and publisher of the newspaper “Athinai.”

In Aegina, she kept her characteristic and lush house in the area of Faro, where she had occasionally hosted important personalities, such as the writer M. Karagatsis. The areas of Metaxourgeio, Monastiraki, Kastella, Hydra, Nafplio, and, of course, her beloved Aegina – neoclassical buildings and traditional structures, cafés, alleys forgotten beneath the Acropolis, old houses with their courtyards and trees – are depicted in her works.
