Following the retrospective exhibition at the Hermoupolia 2009 on the island of Syros (where she presented all the chapters of her work from 1989: interiors, staircases, greenhouses, sea and swimmers), Maria Filopoulou presents a new series of works, with waterfalls, at Zoumboulakis Galleries.
The liquid element as well as her love for water carries through this new chapter.
An interesting transition from beaches and open horizons to cisterns, waterfalls, magic lands of the Cabeiri mysteries; her inner quest leads the artist to create a personal paradise which she invites the viewer to enter.
The rush of the waterfall as it spills on the calm surface of the water pierces the clean cisterns. Blisters, drops, dashes and reflections are created from this movement: elements that conflict with the serenity of the landscape. The viewer has the impression that water springs everywhere.
Another chapter with works of small dimension presents naked bodies enjoying the serenity of the water. A series of small sculptures will be also exhibited, swimmers in total relaxation, abandoned to the sun light.
M. Pournara notes: “in Filopoulou’s work the clarity of the images and the flexibility of the figures remain distinctive features. Nevertheless, nature is transformed into an existentially-tinged embrace, a point where the earth and heaven are united as are humans with water: a pool of Siloam where no one enters and comes out the same. They are reborn and re-baptised”.

She studied painting in Paris at the École National Supérieure des Beaux-Arts under Leonardo Cremonini, during the period 1984-1988.
