
Zoumboulakis Galleries invite you to Alexandra Athanassiades’s «Dreamscape» opening on Thursday, March 10, 2022.
Alexandra’s inspiration for this work is a recurring dream of hers that has persisted for over 30 years. Giving form to its elemental spirituality has always been a compelling notion in the back of her mind. It was during the pandemic’s forced confinement that she focused on its visual translation, employing the emotive nuances of a stark winter landscape that opens up to the sea.
Her installation combines archetypal elements to create an imaginary environment that invokes the spirit of pristine nature. Like a calm wilderness free of any intervention, the scenery’s circular center draws the viewer deeper into a solitary and meditative place.
“Dreamscape” can be seen as a world that existed before human presence and is now forever lost. It can also be felt as a haven of safety and serenity, much needed in these difficult times. A protected place of refuge and peace…

Alexandra Athanassiades was born in 1961 in Athens, Greece where she still lives and works.
Her higher education began in Switzerland, at Lugano’s Franklin College. In 1982 she graduated with distinction from Oxford University’s Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art at St. Anne’s College and was awarded a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture and Printmaking. In 1984 she received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture from New York’s Columbia University.
