Χατζηκυριάκος-Γκίκας Νίκος

Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas (1906-1994), a leading painter, sculptor, engraver, writer, and academic, was born in Athens where at an early age he took painting lessons from Constantinos Parthenis. Later, in Paris he first exhibited his work in 1923. In1933 he organised in Athens the 4th International Architectural Symposium. From 1935 to 1937 he was co-editor of the art magazine 3rd Eye. In 1941 he was offered a position in the Architectural School of the National Technical University of Athens. In 1949 he formed, with other artists including Yiannis Moralis, Yannis Tsarouchis, Nikos Nikolaou, Nikos Engonopoulos and Panayiotis Tetsis, the “Armos” art group. In 1950 he was the Greek participant at the Venice Biennale where he exhibited 17 of his paintings. As Professor of Drawing at the National Technical University of Athens, School of Architecture, (1941-1958), he influenced an entire generation of artists. He also illustrated a number of books, including N. Kazantzakis’s “Odyssey”, Longos’s “Daphne and Chloe” and C.P. Cavafy’s “Poems.”
